CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS, JANUARY 10th, 2016

On a most beautiful balmy Sunday evening approximately 90 members, their families and friends, watched 3 fantastic club championship games. As evening turned into night the tension was palpable. One of the games was decided on the last roll. Starting at 6 p.m. was the Men's Pairs Final with Keith Kirby and Brian Donovan taking on Gerry Selleck and Laurie Hogan. Laurie and Gerry were ahead all evening, but then Brian and Keith scored a 5 to bring the score closer. Eventually the winning score after the 18th end was 24-14. At 7 p.m. both the Women's Singles and the Men's Singles Finals commenced. The Women's Final was between Elizabeth Reid and Debbie Code. The Men's Final was between Matt Cursio and Tim Fewster. In the Men's Final, Matt pulled away to an early lead. However Tim clawed his way back into the game and was only one shot behind with the scores at 21-20. The last few ends saw very tight heads. It was very difficult for the spectators to tell who was holding shot with the respective black and dark green bowls. Matt eventually won the championship with the score 25-20. The Women's Final was a heart stopper. This game lasted for 3 hours. The scores were level pegged at 11-11,13-13, 16-16,19-19 and 24-24 after 28 ends. Everyone held their breath during the final end........(can you imagine how Elizabeth and Deb felt?) and it was only on the last bowl that decided who was the champion.......Debbie Code! It was certainly a wonderful display of high standard competitive bowling by all the finalists. These evening championship games that start in the the bright sunshine and proceed through the evening to the night under lights, have proved to be very popular. There are more spectators coming each year to join the sausage sizzle, the bar facilities and the excellent standard of bowling. Congratulations to the champions: Debbie Code, Matt Cursio, Laurie Hogan and Gerry Selleck. --------------------------Lyn Goodman.
