2015 CUP EVE DINNER AND SHOW

Reality is that "Elvis has left the building" after his concerts, but he returned on Cup Eve to Doncaster Bowling Club, resplendent in diamanté white jumpsuit to sing his best known hits. We sang Love Me Tender, You ain't nothing but a Hound Dog, All Shook Up, Blue Suede Shoes, Return to Sender and more. Frank Powell who was our Elvis impersonator moved between the tables encouraging many of the 99 guests to sing into his microphone with amazing results They sang in tune, out of tune, high and low. Couples and singles got up to dance to many of the songs. The entertainment was terrific. After all, it WAS our era, taking us back to our teenage years. Elvis/Frank also sang songs recorded by Roy Orbison, Englebert Humperdinck and Dean Martin. He finished with a great rendition Frank Sinatra's New York New York. Then it was onto the horse race part of the evening. Starting the Phantom Melbourne Cup call was the Chief Steward Brian Garrett. The lucky winners were: 1st: Mary Smith with Our Ivanhowe. 2nd: Joy Salvage with Fame Game. 3rd Diane Phelan with The Offer. Last horse: Fay Daniels with Sky Hunter. Racing enthusiast, Brian Morris, gave an overview of the real Melbourne Cup probabilities, roughies and hopefuls, emphasising different training methods between Australia and Japan and horses that had won recently at Country Cups. The tip I concluded was....everything has a chance!!!!! Lastly the real Melbourne Cup was drawn and the eventual winners with their money, money, money and bottle of wine were: 1st: Marian Becket with Prince of Penzance. 2nd: Norm Edwards with Max Dynamite. 3rd: Joan Morris with Criterian. Last horse: Keith Kilner with Red Cadeaux. So on Tuesday at 3.15 p.m. it was over until next year. You win some, you lose some, but you have to be happy.......... Lyn Goodman.
